Ajax EN54 fire alarm system: Fire Hub, siren with flash, smoke detector and manual call point

Ajax EN54: a wireless fire alarm system, when do you need one?

Fire safety

You need a fire alarm system if the building regulations require one for your building, and in that case the components must be certified to EN 54. Ajax has its own EN54 range for this: a wireless, addressable fire alarm system with the Fire Hub as the control panel. Because no cables need to be run, it is particularly suitable for existing buildings. In this article you can read what EN 54 means, what the system consists of and how to approach a project.

In brief

Ajax EN54 in four points

Wireless

Detectors and sirens communicate wirelessly with the control panel, with no cabling through the building.

Addressable

Every detector has its own address, so when an alarm is raised you can see exactly where it is.

Fire Hub

The control panel with a 10.1 inch touchscreen manages up to 200 devices in up to 40 fire zones.

Backup power

With an internal battery the control panel and repeaters keep working for 24 or 72 hours during a power cut.

Determine this first

Smoke detectors or a fire alarm system?

These are two different things. In an ordinary home smoke detectors are mandatory, and standalone detectors such as the Ajax FireProtect 2 are sufficient. A fire alarm system is a complete system with a control panel, and it is only mandatory if the building regulations require it for a building.

Good to know whether your building needs a fire alarm system and how extensive it must be is stated in the environmental permit, or follows from the use and size of the building. If you are unsure, check with your municipality, a fire safety consultant or an installer of fire alarm systems before you choose components. You can read more about smoke detectors in the home in our article on smoke detectors and NEN 2555.

What do the numbers mean? EN 54 is a series of European standards, with a separate part for each type of component. Part 2 covers the control panel, part 7 smoke detectors, parts 3 and 23 sound and light, and part 25 wireless connections. The prices are live from our webshop.

Advantages

Why wireless is attractive

No chasing or breaking out

In an existing building you do not have to run cables through ceilings and walls. That saves time, disruption and repair work.

Knowing exactly where

Because every device is addressable, the control panel shows which detector it is and in which zone when an alarm is raised.

Supervised connection

The connection between devices and control panel is monitored continuously, as EN 54-25 requires for wireless components.

Approach

How to approach an EN54 project

1. Determine the requirements

Determine which system your building needs, together with your municipality or a fire safety consultant.

2. Create a design

Record where the detectors, manual call points and sounders will go, in accordance with NEN 2535.

3. Order the components

Build the components from the design in our EN54 configurator and order them from us.

4. Install and hand over

This is done by an installer who fits fire alarm systems. After installation each zone is tested and a certificate is mandatory, followed by an inspection by an independent body.

Frequently asked questions

Ajax EN54

What does EN 54 mean?
EN 54 is the European series of standards for components of fire alarm systems. Each part covers one type of component, such as the control panel (part 2), the power supply (part 4), smoke detectors (part 7) or wireless connections (part 25). A component with an EN 54 certificate has been tested to the part that applies to it.
Can a fire alarm system be wireless?
Yes. A separate part of the standard exists for wireless components, EN 54-25. The Ajax EN54 devices are certified for it. Whether wireless suits your project depends on the design and the requirements that apply to the building.
Is Ajax EN54 the same as the FireProtect 2 smoke detector?
No. The FireProtect 2 is a smoke detector for homes that you connect to an Ajax alarm system. The EN54 range is a separate, certified fire alarm system with its own control panel, the Fire Hub, for buildings where a fire alarm system is mandatory.
What happens in a power failure?
The detectors, sirens and flash units run on a pre-installed battery. The Fire Hub and the Fire ReX run on mains power and switch to an internal battery in the event of a failure, which you choose for 24 or 72 hours of backup power.
How large may the building be?
One Fire Hub manages up to 200 devices in up to 40 fire zones. If the signal does not reach every corner, you extend the range with a Fire ReX, which Ajax specifies at up to 1,800 metres in open field. Indoors the range is smaller because of walls and floors.
What does an Ajax EN54 system cost?
That depends on the number of detectors, sounders and repeaters. The Fire Hub costs € 1.327,93 incl. VAT, a smoke detector from € 154,03 incl. VAT. In our EN54 configurator you build the system and see the total straight away.
