Dome cameras

Inconspicuous and vandal-resistant

A dome camera sits in a compact dome that attracts little attention and is difficult to damage. From the outside, it is also hard to see which way it is facing. This makes the dome camera suitable for shops, offices, schools and homes.

These dome cameras are IP models, which work over a network cable and usually receive their power over it as well.

Where the dome camera excels

Discreet, sturdy and weatherproof

The dome shape hides the viewing direction and protects the lens from contact and weather. Many dome models are vandal-resistant; look at the IK rating if impact resistance matters in your situation. For a subtle appearance, choose a dome in the colour of the ceiling or wall.

For outdoor use, the IP rating matters: it indicates how well the camera withstands dust and water. Most dome cameras have IP66 or IP67. The first digit stands for dust, the second for water; higher is better. Always check the value on the product page.

If you specifically want visible deterrence, see the bullet cameras. If you are looking for a cleaner night image without dome glass, a turret is worth considering.

Series and generation

What intelligence is built in

Within the domes, the Dahua range runs from Entry and Lite to WizSense and WizMind, with Xinghan Vision as the newest generation of image processing. The series determines which smart detection you get; the resolution ranges from 4 megapixel to 8 megapixel (4K) and higher. Higher resolution gives a sharper image, but requires more storage on the recorder.

How to read the series from the model number, and why the recorder must be able to support that series, is explained on the page about Dahua series and model codes.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about dome cameras

Are dome cameras suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. All dome cameras in this range are suitable for outdoor use; pay attention to the IP rating, at least IP65 for outdoor use, and many models have IP66 or IP67.

Can you see what a dome camera is aimed at?

Hardly from the outside: the dome hides the viewing direction. That is an advantage if you want discreet surveillance. If you want the camera to deter, a bullet camera is more visible.

What is the difference between 4 and 8 megapixel?

At 8 megapixel (4K), a number plate or face stays sharper when you zoom in at the same distance. On the other hand, the file is larger, so your recorder needs more storage and bandwidth. For most situations, 4 megapixel is more than sufficient.

Which recorder do I need?

IP dome cameras are recorded with an NVR. Choose the number of channels based on the number of cameras, with room for expansion. View the NVR recorders.
