PTZ cameras

Pan, tilt and zoom remotely

PTZ stands for pan, tilt and zoom. With a single PTZ camera you monitor a large area and zoom in on what is happening. Ideal for business premises, car parks and entrances.

These PTZ cameras are IP models, which work over a network cable and usually also receive their power over it. Not sure? View the PTZ selection guide.

Choosing the right one

This is how much zoom you need

The zoom factor determines how far you can zoom in while keeping the image sharp. A rough guideline:

For business premises or car parks, choose 25x zoom or more, so that you also get sharp detail at a distance. For long distances or critical locations, go for 32x to 45x. For a shop or smaller space, a compact mini PTZ with 4x zoom is often sufficient. If you want the camera to follow people or vehicles by itself, choose a model with auto-tracking.

Good to know

One camera, but only one viewing direction

A PTZ replaces several fixed cameras for an overview of a large site, and can reduce the number of cameras and the installation costs. Bear in mind, however, that a PTZ looks in one direction at a time: anything outside the frame while it zooms in elsewhere is not recorded. For full coverage you therefore often combine a PTZ with a few fixed cameras.

The range consists largely of Dahua, where the series determines which smart functions you get, such as auto-tracking and distinguishing between people and vehicles. How to read this from the model number is explained on the page about Dahua series and model codes.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about PTZ cameras

Does one PTZ replace several fixed cameras?

For an overview of a large site, yes, because you can pan, tilt and zoom in. However, a PTZ looks in one direction at a time: anything outside the frame while zooming is not recorded. For continuous coverage you often combine it with fixed cameras.

How much zoom do I need?

For large sites and car parks 25x or more, for long distances 32x to 45x, and for smaller spaces a mini PTZ with 4x zoom is sufficient. If you cannot decide, use the PTZ selection guide or ask us for advice.

Can the camera follow a person automatically?

Some of the PTZ models have autotracking and then automatically follow a moving object within their range. Check for each product whether this function is available.

Which recorder do I need?

You record IP PTZ cameras with an NVR. Choose the number of channels based on the number of cameras, leaving room for expansion. View the NVR recorders.
