Bullet cameras

Visible surveillance that also deters

A bullet camera has a recognisable elongated shape that you aim at a fixed spot. Precisely because it stands out, it acts as a deterrent: on a façade, driveway or business premises it is immediately clear that surveillance is in place.

These bullet cameras are IP models, which work over a network cable and usually receive their power over it as well.

Where the bullet camera excels

Shape, mounting and weather resistance

The cylindrical shape with a hood above the lens protects against rain and backlight and makes the viewing direction visible. With the adjustable base you mount the camera on a wall, ceiling or pole and can then still adjust its aim.

For outdoor use, the IP rating matters: it states how well the camera resists dust and water. Many models have IP67, meaning fully dust-tight and resistant to temporary immersion. The first digit stands for dust, the second for water; higher is better. Always check the value on the product page.

If you specifically do not want it to be visible which way the camera is facing, see the dome cameras.

Series and generation

What intelligence is built in

Within the bullet cameras, the Dahua range runs from Entry and Lite to WizSense and WizMind, with Xinghan Vision as the newest generation of image processing. The series determines which smart detection you get, such as distinguishing between people and vehicles and filtering out animals to limit false alarms. Models with IR or full colour in the title also see in the dark.

How to read this from the model number, and why the recorder must be able to follow the camera's series, is explained on the page about Dahua series and model codes.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about bullet cameras

Are bullet cameras suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, that is their main application. Pay attention to the IP rating: for outdoor use, at least IP65 is recommended, and many models have IP67. The hood above the lens also protects against rain and backlight.

What is the difference from a dome camera?

A bullet camera stands out and makes the viewing direction visible, which acts as a deterrent. A dome sits under a dome cover, is less conspicuous and hides the direction. If you want discreet surveillance, a dome is the more logical choice.

Do bullet cameras work in the dark?

Models with IR (infrared) in the title see in black and white in complete darkness. Models with full-colour night vision keep a colour image at night as well, with some additional lighting. Check the night performance per model.

Which recorder do I need?

IP bullet cameras are recorded with an NVR. Choose the number of channels based on the number of cameras, with room for expansion. View the NVR recorders.
