Panorama explained

What is a panorama camera?

A panorama camera is a security camera with a very wide field of view. This allows you to monitor a large area with one camera and reduce the number of blind spots. Depending on the model, a panorama camera provides a view of, for example, 180 degrees or 360 degrees.

These cameras are particularly suitable for situations where a broad overview is needed, such as industrial buildings, car parks, shops, entrances and large outdoor areas.

Wide overview

When do you choose a 180 degree camera?

A 180 degree camera captures a wide zone in front of the camera in a single overview. This is useful, for example, when you want to monitor a long façade, a wide entrance, a car park or a large room.

Instead of two separate cameras that each film a different direction, one 180 degree camera can capture both sides at the same time. This means you need fewer cameras and the footage stays clear within a single camera system.

The Secures range includes several Dahua 180 degree cameras, including models with two lenses in which the separate images are merged into one wide panoramic image.

Full all-round view

When do you choose a 360 degree camera?

A 360 degree camera is designed to capture the entire environment around the camera. This type is often mounted centrally on a ceiling and is therefore suitable for shops, reception areas, warehouses and other open spaces, for example.

With a single 360 degree camera you can survey a large area without having to place multiple cameras facing different directions.

A commonly used type is the fisheye camera. Thanks to the very wide lens, it can capture almost the entire environment around the mounting point.

180° or 360°

Which panorama camera suits your situation?

Choose a 180 degree camera when you mainly want to view a wide area in front of the camera, such as a façade, car park or wide entrance.

A 360 degree camera is more suitable when the camera is placed centrally and you want a complete view all around the mounting point.

Do you want to monitor one specific direction accurately? In that case, a standard IP camera may suit the application better.

Multi-lens

Panorama camera with multiple lenses

Many professional panorama cameras use multiple lenses. Each lens captures a separate part of the surroundings. The camera then combines these images into a wide overview.

The advantage of this is that a large area can be monitored with one camera while still retaining a great deal of detail.

The range includes dual-lens cameras, models with multiple sensors and cameras designed specifically for perimeter surveillance.

Image quality

What resolution does a panorama camera need?

Because a panorama camera covers a larger area, sufficient resolution is important. After all, the available number of pixels is spread over a wider field of view.

Secures offers panorama cameras in various resolutions, including 6MP, 8MP, 12MP and models in which multiple sensors together deliver an even higher total resolution.

The resolution required depends on the size of the area and how much detail you want to be able to recognise. A general overview has different requirements than when people or events must remain recognisable at a greater distance.

Outdoor surveillance

Panorama camera for outdoor use

A panorama camera can also be very suitable for outdoor use. Think, for example, of car parks, business premises, loading and unloading areas or wide façades.

With an outdoor camera, pay attention not only to the field of view but also to characteristics such as weather resistance, night vision, light sensitivity and smart detection.

For situations in which you want to be able to pan and zoom actively, you can also consider a PTZ camera. A panorama camera provides a continuous overview, whereas a PTZ camera can move and zoom in on a target.

Smart functions

Smart detection in panorama cameras

Many Dahua panorama cameras have smart camera functions. Depending on the model, people, vehicles or movement within certain zones can be detected, for example.

The range includes cameras from the WizSense and WizMind series, among others. These functions are particularly relevant for professional camera surveillance where not only image recording but also automatic detection is important.

Recording and storage

Connecting a panorama camera to a recorder

The panorama and multi-lens cameras in this category are IP cameras and can be combined with a suitable NVR recorder.

When choosing a recorder, pay close attention to the supported resolution, bandwidth and number of camera channels. Panorama cameras with a high resolution or multiple sensors may require more network and storage capacity than a standard security camera.
