Surveillance without a network cable
A WiFi camera sends its images wirelessly over your network, so you can easily install and move it without running a network cable. Ideal for quickly adding extra surveillance in and around your home or business premises.
If you are looking for a system with fixed cabling and central recording, see the IP cameras.
The advantages
Where WiFi is useful
Without a data cable, installation is simple and you can easily expand later with extra cameras. Via the app you can watch live from anywhere and set up motion notifications. Many models have two-way audio, with a microphone and speaker, so you can talk through the camera. A wireless connection does not automatically mean lower quality: 4K is also possible.
Some models run on a battery with a solar panel, so you no longer need any cable at all. Please note: some WiFi cameras, such as those from Dahua, still need a power cable; only the data cable is no longer needed.
Good to know
What to look out for
A wireless connection is more sensitive than a fixed one. The range is limited by walls, floors and sometimes metal, and a busy WiFi network can cause interruptions. Therefore test your signal at the camera's location before you choose.
High-resolution WiFi cameras use a lot of bandwidth during continuous recording, which can slow down other devices on your network. For storage you can often choose between the cloud and local storage; storing locally saves monthly subscription costs. If you are unsure whether WiFi is the best choice for your situation, we are happy to help.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about WiFi cameras
Does a WiFi camera work completely without cables?
The data cable is no longer needed, but many WiFi cameras still need power. Only models with a battery, often with a solar panel as well, work completely wirelessly.
Is the image quality lower than with a wired camera?
Not necessarily: 4K is also possible with WiFi. However, the connection is more sensitive. With a weak signal or a busy network, quality may temporarily drop, so good WiFi coverage at the camera's location is important.
Where are the images stored?
That depends on the model: in the cloud, locally on a memory card or base station, or both. Local storage has no monthly subscription costs. Check the storage options for each product.
How far does the WiFi signal reach?
This differs per situation and is limited by walls, floors and metal. Test your signal at the desired location before you buy; with a strong network or an extender you can deal with weak spots.
