Power and connect multiple cameras
A network switch distributes the network over multiple devices and, with a PoE switch, also supplies power to your cameras over the same cable. This way you can connect more cameras than there are ports on your recorder.
For loose cables, connectors and PoE injectors, see network products.
Choosing the right one
Ports, PoE budget and management
First look at the number of ports: take a few more than the number of cameras, so that you can expand later. With a PoE switch, besides the number of PoE ports, the PoE budget also counts: the total power the switch can supply across all ports. More or heavier cameras require a higher budget.
An unmanaged switch works immediately without configuration and is fine for most setups. A managed switch gives you control over network traffic (VLANs, priority), which is useful for larger or mixed installations.
For gigabit speed you choose a gigabit switch, so that high-resolution cameras do not get in each other's way. If you are unsure about the right model or budget, we will check it with you.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about network switches
How many ports do I need?
At least as many as you have cameras, plus some margin for expansion and the connection to your recorder or router. An 8-port PoE switch is a common choice for a handful of cameras.
What is PoE budget and why is it important?
The PoE budget is the total power the switch can supply across all ports combined. If you connect many or heavier cameras (for example PTZ), the budget must be high enough to power them all at the same time.
Do I need a managed or unmanaged switch?
For an ordinary camera setup an unmanaged switch is sufficient: connect it and you are done. A managed switch is useful in larger networks where you want to separate or prioritise traffic.
