Camera security including installation

A camera security system is not something you simply buy. Important questions need to be answered before you make a purchase. It is also important to consider how you are going to install it. In this article we explain in detail how you can do this best.

Or, if you would rather not do this yourself, you can simply contact us. We will then put together a camera security system based on your needs and install it for you.

Would you like more information? Then read our article to see how we arrive at the ideal camera security system.

What is the purpose of your security system?

Of course you want to protect something, but here too there are many options. Consider:

  • Burglary prevention

Do you want to prevent break-ins and monitor suspicious activity? Then we recommend installing indoor and outdoor cameras. Depending on your wishes, we often choose dome or bullet cameras with night vision.

  • Personal safety

Do you want to ensure the safety of your family, employees or residents? For this we recommend choosing a camera with motion detection. You will then receive a notification as soon as unauthorised movement is detected.

  • Monitoring your property

Do you want to protect something specific, such as your driveway, garden or business premises? Then choose an outdoor camera with high resolution and night vision. We prefer a bullet camera or dome camera because of the wide field of view.

Which types of cameras are available and which one best suits my situation?

  • Indoor or outdoor cameras?

Do you need cameras that can withstand weather conditions? Almost all of our cameras are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. View our indoor surveillance cameras here or all outdoor security cameras here.

  • Dome, bullet or PTZ cameras?

Do you want a wide field of view (dome camera), targeted monitoring (bullet camera) or adjustable angles (PTZ – Pan, Tilt, Zoom camera)?

  • Wired or wireless?

We always recommend choosing a wired security camera. Thanks to PoE (Power over Ethernet), only a network cable needs to be run. The power is carried over the network cable. An important additional advantage is that a network cable is always more stable than WiFi.

How many cameras do I need and where should they be placed?

How many entrances, critical points and blind spots are there?

This is the first thing a potential burglar looks for. By making an overview of all entrances and blind spots, we can determine what kind of camera is needed. If you have several blind spots, consider a PTZ camera. This allows you to cover several blind spots with a single camera.

Which areas need to be monitored continuously?

By positioning security cameras strategically, we always try to find a middle ground between security and affordability. Depending on your type of home, we advise taking the following rooms into account:

  1. Entrances and exits of your home (front door, back door, side entrances)
  2. Driveway and parking space (also consider protecting your vehicle or monitoring visitors)
  3. Ground floor windows (a relatively vulnerable break-in point)
  4. Gardens and outdoor areas (back garden, sheds, outbuildings)
  5. Indoor spaces (such as entrance halls, corridors or open areas)
  6. Tills & safes (for businesses)

Which resolution and image quality do you need?

The choice between HD, Full HD and 4K resolution for your security camera depends on your specific needs, your budget and the situation in which you want to use the cameras. Here is an overview of when you can consider each resolution:

HD (720p)

HD is suitable for general areas where detail is less critical, for example indoor spaces such as a living room or an office. The distance here is not great, so you can get by with a lower resolution. We are happy to help you consider this, because a lower resolution fits within a budget more easily.

Full HD (1080p)

Full HD resolution is suitable for living rooms, workplaces and outdoor areas where more detailed images are required (such as recognition of faces or number plates). Full HD security cameras offer a good balance between price and quality, which makes them suitable for most standard security systems.

4K Ultra HD (2160p)

4K security cameras are used when detailed images are crucial. We often see this in large open spaces, such as shopping centres, warehouses or larger outdoor areas.

Which NVR do I need?

An NVR is a Network Video Recorder. You choose an NVR based on the resolution, the number of cameras and the bandwidth. In addition to an NVR, you also need a hard drive to store the footage. We have a formula for this.

  • How many cameras do you need?
  • How long do you want to keep the footage?
  • At what resolution do you want to store the footage?

Formula for calculating storage space:

  • You have 4 cameras with a bitrate of 3Mbps.
  • You want to record 24 hours a day and keep the recordings for 30 days.
  • Formula: 4 (cameras) * 3 (Mbps) * 24 (hours) * 30 (days) = +/ 105GB

Please note: this is only a basic calculation. For accurate and more complex situations, we always advise you to contact our customer service.

Which features are important for my situation?

  • Motion detection: Do the cameras need to respond to movement? View all motion detectors here.
  • Two-way audio: Do you want to communicate through the camera? Then take a look at our doorbell sets or our affordable AI WiFi camera.
  • Integration with smart devices: Does the system need to be compatible with other smart home devices or platforms such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Apple HomeKit?
  • Night vision (IR): security cameras with infrared can capture images in complete darkness. If a camera has this feature, IR appears in the product title.
  • Facial recognition: with the right NVR and camera, you can create databases in which faces are stored.
  • Weather resistance: if you want to use security cameras outdoors, we recommend an IP rating of at least 67. See the image below for an explanation of IP ratings.
  • PTZ: Pan, Tilt & Zoom. This allows you to aim the security cameras where you want to film. You can even set this on a schedule.
  • AI: AI can be interpreted in many ways and many functions are available for it, including:
    • Face recognition
    • Vehicle recognition
    • Distinguishing between different objects
    • People counter
    • Crowd management
    • Number plate recognition (ANPR camera)
    • Heat Mapping
