An alarm system for elderly people: you hope you never need it. In practice, however, we see that it is unfortunately often needed. In this article we explain how you choose an alarm system that is suitable for elderly people, which products you need and how you set it up simply for daily use.

Which alarm system do we recommend for elderly people?

How do you arm the alarm system?

This is of course possible via the central control panel (or via an app). To make it as easy as possible for our seniors, however, we recommend an Ajax KeyPad Plus. With this, you can simply use a tag or pass to arm the system. The alternative is an Ajax SpaceControl. This is a remote control that can also be used to send an SOS.

How can older people alert their contacts?

We have 2 options, which can be used in several ways:

1. Ajax Button: the life-saving button

This is the best way to be sure that all is well at all times. With the Ajax Button you can send an alarm alert to family and/or emergency services at the press of a button. The Ajax Button can be worn on a keycord, so that it is always close at hand. Depending on the home, we recommend placing it in several locations, such as:

– Mobile option:

The Ajax Button can be worn on a keycord, but it is also so small that it is easy to attach to a rollator or walking stick.

– Bedroom:

On or next to the bedside table.

– Living room:

Next to or under the favourite chair or sofa.

– Hallway or front door:

If something seems wrong, the button can be pressed immediately.

– Toilet:

On the wall next to the toilet, at hand height. Particularly useful if there is a risk of falling or dizziness.

– Bathroom:

In a waterproof holder outside the shower area but within reach, or in a dry spot near the washbasin or front door.

– Kitchen:

At the dining table or kitchen counter, if people often sit or work there. Particularly useful in the event of accidents with hot water, gas or cuts.

2. Wireless remote control: clear operation

We have upgraded the Ajax SpaceControl. The standard Ajax SpaceControl has no instructions printed on it. For this reason, we have laser-engraved clear text on it, especially for seniors. This way it is always clear which action will be carried out (when the button is pressed).

User-friendly settings

With these tips your loved ones are not only better protected, but you can also have extra peace of mind yourself.

Automatic arming

The Ajax alarm system can also be armed automatically (for example after 23:00). This way the alarm system is always active, without any manual action being required.

Simple notifications

Push notifications and telephone notification: set up the system so that, in the event of an alarm, a family member or carer is called immediately or receives a notification via the app.
Acoustic alarm with flashing light: add a siren with a flashing light (e.g. Ajax StreetSiren with LED lamp) so that people who are hard of hearing also notice the alarm.

Monitoring by family or a care organisation

Viewing via the app: family members can create an account and manage or check the system remotely.
Watching live: via the Ajax app and a compatible security camera you can watch live to verify a potentially dangerous situation.
Connecting to an alarm receiving centre: for extra certainty you can connect the system to a private alarm receiving centre (PAC) that responds to alerts 24/7.

Useful automations

By using home automation, you can create a smart home. The Ajax alarm system can also play a useful role here. Think of automations such as:

Night lighting on movement
If movement is detected at night (e.g. in the hallway or bedroom), the lights come on softly and automatically.
Scenario for informal care or home care
Set it so that when a specific user (e.g. home care) arms or disarms the system, a notification is sent to family ("Help arrived at 09:03").
Opening a smart lock via the app
Connect a smart door lock (such as Tedee Pro) to the system, so that the door can be opened at the press of a button. In an emergency, someone else can also open the door.

What does this system offer children or carers?

For family members and/or informal carers, the Ajax alarm system offers many advantages. You receive a notification immediately when the alarm goes off, you can watch live via the app, and you can see exactly when, for example, the home care worker has arrived. You can also manage the system remotely, so you can check at any time that everything in the home is safe, even if you are not nearby yourself. That gives not only elderly people a sense of security, but also their loved ones.
