Mortise lock

M&C mortise lock for an interchangeable cylinder

A mortise lock sits inside the door and is operated with an interchangeable cylinder. M&C supplies it as a set with lock, keep and strike plate. For the best security, M&C advises combining the lock with an M&C security cylinder and M&C door hardware.

Sizes

Backset and centre distance: which lock fits?

A mortise lock must fit the recess that is already in your door. Pay attention to three things: the backset, the centre distance and the faceplate shape. If you are replacing a lock, use the same dimensions as the old lock.

Mortise lock dimension drawing: backset, centre distance and faceplate shape

Backset

The distance from the front of the faceplate to the centre of the handle and the cylinder. This determines how far the handle and the cylinder sit from the edge of the door. The 55 mm lock has a backset of 50, the 72 mm oval lock a backset of 60.

PC size

The distance from the centre of the handle to the centre of the cylinder. The centre of the cylinder is the middle of the round part, not the middle of the whole hole. Your hardware must have the same centre distance as the lock.

Faceplate shape

Oval has rounded ends, square has square corners. Choose the shape that fits the routed recess in the edge of your door.

How to measure your current lock

  1. Backset: measure on the door from the edge, where the faceplate sits, to the centre of the handle.
  2. Centre distance: measure from the centre of the handle to the centre of the round part of the cylinder.
  3. Faceplate shape: open the door and look at the ends of the faceplate in the edge of the door: round or square.

For the 72 mm square version, M&C does not specify a backset. Unsure about a dimension? Send us a photo of the edge of your door and of the hardware, and we will help you check.

Secure and durable

SKG** approved, made of galvanised steel

According to M&C, the M&C security mortise locks are SKG** approved. The lock and the strike plate are made of corrosion-resistant galvanised steel. M&C describes the set as easy to install in most common doors.

Choose the lock to match the centre distance of your door: the distance between the centre of the handle and the centre of the cylinder. With a centre distance of 55 mm, M&C hardware with a centre distance of 55 fits; with 72 mm, hardware with a centre distance of 72. You build the cylinder in the M&C configurator.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which centre distance do I need?

Measure the distance between the centre of the handle (or knob) and the centre of the cylinder hole. In the Netherlands this is usually 55 or 72 mm. Choose the lock and the fittings with the same PC size.

What is the backset of a mortise lock?

The backset is the distance from the front of the faceplate to the centre of the handle and the cylinder. For a new lock, use the same backset as the old one, otherwise the holes in the door will not line up. The 55 mm M&C lock has a backset of 50, the 72 mm oval lock a backset of 60.

What does oval or square mean?

This is the shape of the faceplate, the part you see in the edge of the door. Oval has rounded ends, square has square corners. Choose the shape that fits the routed recess in your door.

Is a cylinder included?

No. The mortise lock is operated with an interchangeable cylinder, which you order separately. Build it in the M&C configurator, if required keyed alike with your other doors.

Is the M&C mortise lock SKG approved?

According to M&C, the M&C security mortise locks are SKG** approved. For an external door, combine the lock with an SKG*** cylinder and security hardware.

What is in the set?

M&C supplies the mortise locks as a set with lock, strike box and strike plate. For the 72 mm straight version, M&C lists the strike box and the screws, and for 55 mm the strike plate and the strike box.
