Bullet camera buying guide

A bullet camera is a popular security camera for homes, shops, business premises and outdoor areas. Thanks to its recognisable shape, the camera is clearly visible, which has a deterrent effect straight away. In this buying guide we explain what to look out for when choosing the right bullet camera.

What determines the right bullet camera?

The right choice depends mainly on where you want to place the camera, the distance you want to cover, the image quality you want and the level of deterrence. A camera for a front door requires different specifications from a camera for a large business site or a dark outdoor location.

Step 1: choose the right resolution

The resolution determines how much detail you see in the image. For most situations, 4MP is an excellent choice. If you want more detail, for example to recognise people or vehicles, choose 6MP or 8MP. For critical security or very detailed images, 12MP models are also available.

  • 2MP: suitable for basic surveillance
  • 4MP: best choice for most situations
  • 6MP: extra detail for larger zones
  • 8MP: very sharp images, also known as 4K
  • 12MP: maximum image quality for professional applications

Step 2: fixed lens or motorised zoom lens?

A fixed lens, such as 2.8mm or 3.6mm, is suitable when you know in advance which area you want to film. A 2.8mm lens gives a wider image, while a 3.6mm lens is slightly more focused.

If you want more flexibility, choose a motorised zoom lens. This lets you set the viewing angle more precisely, for example from 2.7 to 12mm or 2.7 to 13.5mm. This is particularly useful for driveways, business premises, car parks and longer distances.

Best choice for dark locations

For dark outdoor locations, driveways and business sites, you should preferably choose a model with Starlight, Deeplight, Full-color or Smart Dual Light. This keeps the image usable even in low light.

Best choice for professional security

For business premises, larger sites and critical locations, a WizMind bullet camera is a strong choice. These models offer more advanced detection and are suitable for professional applications.

Best choice for long distances

Does the camera need to see further or capture a specific zone at a distance in sharp detail? Then choose a model with a more powerful motorised zoom lens, such as 7-35mm or 8-32mm.

Best choice for maximum image quality

Do you want to capture as much detail as possible? Then you will end up with 8MP or 12MP bullet cameras. These are mainly of interest for professional security and situations where recognition is important.

Which bullet camera suits your situation?

  • For standard security: choose a 4MP bullet camera with a fixed 2.8mm lens
  • For more detail: choose a 6MP or 8MP bullet camera
  • For flexible adjustment: choose a model with a motorised zoom lens
  • For dark locations: choose Starlight, Deeplight or Smart Dual Light
  • For a colour image in the dark: choose Full-color

Common mistakes when choosing a bullet camera

  • Looking only at megapixels and not at the lens or night vision
  • Choosing a fixed lens when flexibility is needed
  • Not taking the lighting in the surroundings into account
  • Not choosing active deterrence in higher-risk locations
  • Forgetting to check whether ePoE is needed for long distances
