PTZ camera buying guide

Buying a PTZ camera seems simple, until you see the options. Different zoom levels, resolutions, AI functions and models quickly make the choice complicated. In this buying guide we explain step by step what to look out for, so that you know exactly which PTZ camera best suits your situation.

What determines the right PTZ camera?

The right choice depends mainly on the location, the distance and the purpose of the security. A camera for a shop calls for something different from a camera for a large business site. By determining in advance what you want to protect, you avoid paying too much or falling short.

Step 1: how large is the area you want to secure?

Small spaces, such as shops, entrances and offices

For smaller spaces, a mini-PTZ with 4x zoom is often sufficient. These models are compact, affordable and suitable for short distances.

Large areas and long distances

For large business sites, industrial environments and locations where you want to see details at long distances, 32x to 45x zoom is the preferred choice.

High-end security

For critical locations where maximum performance is required, choose a high-end PTZ camera with high resolution, powerful zoom and auto-tracking.

Step 2: Do you need AI and auto-tracking?

Not every situation calls for smart functions, but in many cases they make a big difference.

Without AI
Well suited to basic surveillance and recording for later review.

With AI (WizSense / auto-tracking)
The camera recognises people and vehicles and can follow them automatically.

Ideal for:

  • Business sites
  • Active surveillance
  • Theft prevention

Many Dahua models in our range feature this technology:

Step 3: which resolution do you need?

The resolution determines how much detail you see. A 2MP PTZ camera is suitable for basic use and is often more affordable. A 4MP PTZ camera offers a strong balance between price and image quality. An 8MP PTZ camera, also known as 4K, is suitable when maximum sharpness is important.

Please note: at long distances, optical zoom is often more important than resolution alone. In practice, a camera with strong zoom can be more valuable than a camera with high resolution but limited zoom.

Step 4: which additional features are important?

Dual-lens PTZ cameras

A dual-lens PTZ camera combines overview and detail. This allows you to keep watching a wider area while zooming in on a specific situation at the same time.

TiOC PTZ cameras

TiOC stands for active deterrence. These cameras can, for example, use light signals or sound to deter unwanted visitors. This makes them of interest for sites where prevention is important.

Starlight technology

Starlight technology provides better images in low light. This is particularly important for outdoor areas, car parks and locations where lighting is not always plentiful.

Step 5: pay attention to mounting and power supply

When choosing a PTZ camera, it is important to consider mounting and power supply. Some models are supplied with a wall mount and power supply, while with other models you need to arrange this separately. This affects the total cost and the installation.

Therefore, always check whether the camera is supplied with the correct mounting bracket, power supply or support for your installation.

Common mistakes when choosing a PTZ camera

  • Choosing too little optical zoom for the distance
  • Looking only at the price
  • Not taking the lighting in the surroundings into account
  • Not combining fixed cameras with PTZ cameras
  • Forgetting to check which mounting and power supply are required

A PTZ camera is powerful, but it only ever looks in one direction. That is why, in many situations, it is sensible to combine PTZ cameras with fixed cameras. This way you benefit from flexibility while retaining constant coverage.

Which PTZ camera suits your situation?

  • Small space: choose a mini-PTZ with 4x zoom
  • Medium-sized area: choose a PTZ camera with 25x zoom
  • Large site: choose 32x to 45x optical zoom
  • Maximum security: choose AI, auto-tracking and, if required, 8MP image quality
  • Active deterrence: choose a TiOC PTZ camera
  • Overview and detail at the same time: choose a dual-lens PTZ camera
