Choosing a camera

Which surveillance camera do you need?

Which surveillance camera suits best depends on the location you want to secure, the image quality you want and the way you want to store footage. For a home, one camera is sometimes enough, while for a shop, office or business premises you often choose several cameras within one camera system.

  • For easy installation, choose a WiFi camera.
  • For a stable professional connection, choose an IP camera, for example via PoE.
  • Do you have existing coax cabling? Then a coax camera can be a good choice.
  • For outdoor use, choose a camera that is sufficiently protected against rain and dust.
  • Do you want to be able to recognise people or other details clearly? Then choose sufficient resolution and a suitable lens.
  • For large sites, a PTZ camera is worth considering, because it can pan, tilt and zoom.

Professional camera surveillance

Surveillance camera for home or business

A professional surveillance camera offers more than just live viewing. Depending on the model, you can record footage, review it, receive notifications and use smart detection.

For businesses, professional camera surveillance can be used, for example, at entrances, warehouses, shops, car parks and business premises. At home, security cameras are often placed at the front door, driveway, garden or around the house.

At Secures you will find both individual professional security cameras and components for a complete camera system.

Camera types

Which type of security camera should you choose?

Surveillance cameras are available in various designs. Which shape is best depends mainly on the placement and the area you want to monitor.

Dome camera

A dome camera has a compact, round housing and is widely used in shops, offices and other business premises. Depending on the model, a dome camera can also be installed outdoors.

Bullet camera

A bullet camera is clearly visible and therefore suitable for facades, driveways and business premises. Its conspicuous shape can also have a deterrent effect.

Turret camera

A turret camera has a compact housing and is easy to adjust to the desired direction. These cameras are widely used for both homes and business premises.

PTZ camera

A PTZ camera can pan, tilt and zoom. This makes this type particularly suitable for larger areas where you want to view different parts of the site flexibly.

Outdoor cameras

Professional outdoor security camera

For outdoor camera surveillance, it is important that the camera can withstand the weather. Therefore, look at the IP rating of the model. A higher IP rating means the housing is better protected against dust and water, among other things.

Will a camera be installed in a place where it is easily accessible? Then a vandal-resistant version can be worth considering. Also pay attention to night vision, viewing angle and the distance at which you want to be able to recognise people, vehicles or other details.

For larger outdoor areas, a PTZ camera may be of interest, while a bullet camera or turret camera is often used for a fixed viewing direction, for example at a facade, entrance or car park.

Connection

IP camera, WiFi camera or coax camera?

An IP camera connects to the network and is widely used in professional camera systems. With PoE models, data and power can be supplied through a single network cable. This provides a stable connection and makes a camera system easy to expand.

A WiFi camera communicates wirelessly with the network. This means you do not need to run a network cable between the camera and the network. A good and stable WiFi connection remains important, however.

Do you already have a camera system with coax cabling? Then you do not always need to replace this infrastructure. With modern coax cameras, you can keep using the existing cabling while benefiting from modern image quality and camera features.

Image quality

What resolution does your surveillance camera need?

The resolution partly determines how much detail a camera can capture. In the Secures range, you will find surveillance cameras in various resolutions, including 2MP, 4MP, 5MP, 6MP and 8MP.

For many applications, 4MP and 5MP offer a good balance between image quality, storage and price. If you want to capture extra detail, an 8MP or 4K camera may be worth considering.

However, more megapixels are not automatically better. The distance to the subject, the lens used, the viewing angle and the lighting conditions also determine how much detail is ultimately visible. Decide in advance what you want to be able to observe or recognise in the camera images.

Smart functions

Smart camera surveillance and night vision

Modern security cameras can detect events automatically and alert you when movement is detected. Depending on the model, smart camera surveillance can, for example, distinguish between people and vehicles.

For camera surveillance in the dark, many cameras are equipped with infrared or other night vision technologies. This keeps the area visible in the evening and at night as well.

For specific situations, thermal cameras are also available in the range. These are mainly used for professional applications where detection under difficult visibility conditions is important.

Recording and storage

Professional camera system with recorder

Do you want to combine several surveillance cameras and store footage centrally? Then you can build a professional camera system with a recorder.

For IP cameras, an NVR recorder is usually used for this. An NVR stores the camera images centrally and makes it possible to review recordings later.

How many channels and how much storage you need depends on the number of cameras, the resolution and how long you want to keep footage. Secures offers NVR recorders for 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 64 and 128 channels, among others.

Do you use coax cameras? Then see the XVR recorders for suitable storage options.

Price

What does a surveillance camera cost?

The price of a surveillance camera depends, among other things, on the resolution, camera type, lens and the functions included. A basic security camera is therefore cheaper than a professional model with, for example, high resolution, smart detection, night vision or optical zoom.

Do you want to buy a complete camera surveillance system? Then also take into account any recorder, hard drive, cabling, network equipment and camera accessories.

On this page you can easily filter surveillance cameras by price and specifications. This helps you quickly find a camera that suits your application and budget.
