Ajax hubs compared: Hub, Hub 2, Hub 2 Plus and Hub BP side by side at the same scale

Which Ajax hub suits you? Hub, Hub 2, Hub 2 Plus and Hub BP compared

Ajax hubs

The hub is the heart of your Ajax alarm system: all detectors, sirens and controls communicate with it. Ajax has four wireless hubs for homes and businesses: the Hub, the Hub 2, the Hub 2 Plus and the Hub BP. They differ mainly on three points: photo verification, the number of communication channels and the power supply. Below you can see them side by side and read which one suits your situation.

In brief

Quickly to the right hub

Hub (4G)

Affordable entry-level model for a small house or apartment, without photos with an alarm.

Hub 2 (4G)

Photo verification with MotionCam. The logical choice for most homes.

Hub 2 Plus (4G)

Four communication channels and the highest capacity. It also has a 4.5x faster processor and 8x more flash memory than the Hub 2, so it stays up to date for years.

Hub BP

Runs entirely on battery via 4G, for locations without mains power or cabling.

Basic

What does an Ajax hub do?

The hub monitors all your detectors via the encrypted Jeweller radio and, in the event of an alarm, warns both you (via the free Ajax app) and, if desired, the alarm receiving centre within milliseconds. An Ajax system does not work without a hub. You therefore always start with a hub, either on its own or as part of a kit. All four hubs work without a mandatory subscription.

Difference 1

Photo verification: photos or no photos with an alarm

This is the main difference. With photo verification, MotionCam motion detectors send photos along as soon as an alarm is triggered, so you can see straight away whether something is really wrong and avoid false alarms. The Hub 2, Hub 2 Plus and Hub BP support MotionCam. The original Hub does not. If you want photos with an alarm, choose at least the Hub 2 (4G).

Difference 2

Communication channels and backup

The more channels, the smaller the chance of your system going offline. The Hub and Hub 2 use Ethernet with a mobile back-up; the Hub 2 Plus adds Wi-Fi to that and has four channels that work in parallel. The Hub BP, by contrast, works entirely over the mobile network, without a network cable.

Note the mobile network: 2G is being phased out in the Netherlands. There are still Hub (2G) and Hub 2 (2G) versions, and they continue to work via the network cable, but for a new installation with long-term mobile back-up we recommend a 4G model.

Difference 3

Mains power or battery

The Hub, Hub 2 and Hub 2 Plus run on mains power and keep the system active for up to 15 hours during a power cut with the built-in back-up battery. The Hub BP runs entirely on an external battery and needs no mains power supply or cabling. This makes it suitable for places without power or internet, such as an outbuilding, boat or temporary setup.

More value for money

Why the Hub 2 Plus is future-proof

The Hub 2 Plus is the most efficient control panel from Ajax. Compared with the standard Hub 2, it has a processor that is 4.5 times as powerful and 8 times as much flash memory. Thanks to this more robust hardware, the system keeps running smoothly for years and can continue to receive new features and updates. For anyone who wants to keep their security system for a long time, that is the difference that justifies the higher price.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about the Ajax hub

Do I need a subscription?
No. The Ajax app is free and works without a subscription. You only need an M2M SIM card if you want to use the mobile back-up (4G) in addition to your internet connection.
What is the difference between the Hub and the Hub 2?
The Hub 2 adds two things: photo verification with MotionCam and a second SIM card. The original Hub does not support MotionCam. If you need photos with an alarm, choose at least a Hub 2 (4G).
What is photo verification (MotionCam)?
In the event of an alarm, MotionCam motion detectors send photos along, so you can see immediately whether something is really wrong and avoid false alarms. Only the Hub 2, Hub 2 Plus and Hub BP support this; the original Hub does not.
2G is being phased out. Will my hub still work?
Yes. Via the network cable (Ethernet), a 2G hub continues to work fully; only the mobile 2G backup is lost once the 2G network is switched off. For new installations we recommend a 4G model.
What is the difference between a hub and a kit?
A kit is a good-value bundle of a hub with a set of detectors and controls. If you want your own exact configuration, you buy a hub separately and put the rest together yourself using the configurator.
Can a hub run on a battery or 12/24 volt?
Yes. The Hub BP runs entirely on an external battery, without mains power. There are also special 12/24V versions of the Hub 2 and Hub 2 Plus for a low-voltage source, such as a boat, camper or solar-powered installation.
