Turret cameras
Open lens for a clean night image
The lens sits loose in an open housing, without dome glass that reflects infrared light at night. Compact, easy to aim and usually brighter in the dark than a dome.
IP cameras over the network (PoE), up to 12 megapixel.

Turret cameras
Open lens, clean night image
A turret camera has the lens mounted loose in an open housing, without the dome that on a dome camera can sometimes reflect infrared light back into the image. This generally gives a clearer night image, in a compact form that is easy to aim.
These turret cameras are IP models: they work over a network cable and usually receive their power over it as well.
What the turret does well
Turret, dome or bullet
The turret sits between the dome and the bullet. Where a dome hides under a cover and a bullet is deliberately visible, the turret has an open lens with no dome glass in front of it. This reduces reflection of its own infrared light at night, which makes the image cleaner in the dark.
The shape is compact and, once mounted, easy to turn in the right direction. For an entrance, facade or parking space where the night image matters, the turret is often the practical choice. In this range the IP cameras go up to 12 megapixel, with power over the network cable (PoE).
Series and generation
What intelligence is built in
Within the turrets too, the Dahua range runs from Entry and Lite up to WizSense and WizMind, with Xinghan Vision as the newest generation of image processing. The series determines which smart detection you get, such as distinguishing between people and vehicles and filtering out animals to limit false alarms.
How to read this from the model number, and why the recorder must be able to follow the camera's series, is explained on the page about Dahua series and model codes.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about turret cameras
What is the difference between a turret and a dome?
With a turret the lens is mounted loose in an open housing, with a dome it sits under a cover. The turret generally gives a clearer night image because there is no dome glass in front of it; the dome is more discreet and conceals the viewing direction better.
Do I need a network cable?
Yes. These are IP cameras, which work over a network cable and usually also receive their power over it (PoE). If you only have coax cabling, see the coax turret cameras.
What resolution do I need?
For recognisable images at short to medium distances, 4 megapixels is usually more than sufficient. If you want to be able to zoom in further on a number plate or face, choose 8 megapixels or higher. Bear in mind that a higher resolution requires more storage and bandwidth from the recorder.
Do turret cameras work in colour at night?
Some of the turrets have full-colour night vision with additional lighting, so that you keep a colour image in the dark as well. Models without this function switch to an infrared black-and-white image at night. Check this per model.
